HISTORIC RECOGNITION: INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Thousands of people left Germany in fear for their lives when Nazi party leader Adolf Hitler was elected Chancellor of Germany on January 30th, 1933. The exact number of people who did not get out, and subsequently died in the Holocaust that took place in Europe between 1933 and 1945 is not known, but is estimated at eleven million. About six million were of the Jewish faith, and about five million belonged to other ethnic or religious groups such as the Roma and Sinti (Gypsies) and Jehovah’s Witnesses, or groups Hitler considered troublemakers or inferior beings, such as political dissidents, Freemasons, artists, priests, and the mentally and physically handicapped.
