Queen Elizabeth II became Britain’s Queen on February 6th, 1952, but was crowned queen on June 2nd, 1953. The coronation was televised, but I didn’t watch it because (a) we didn’t have a telly in 1953, and (b) I was only an infant and not all that interested in such things. Later, however, my godmother gave me a lovely cut-out storybook of the coronation, and being a hoarder. I would still have it if it had not fallen prey to one of my family’s trans-Atlantic moves.
Today starts the official celebrations of the queen’s seventy years on the throne. (Some unofficial ones have already taken place.)
