In Europe, the end of WW II came when Germany surrendered to Allied forces on May 7th, 1945, but hostilities didn’t officially end until May 8th, and so that is the date on which people in the UK and most of Europe still celebrate VE (Victory In Europe) Day. Russians celebrate it on May 9th, and do so in a big way.
