
On August 3rd, 1442, Columbus sailed the ocean blue and discovered a place he thought was India, but wasn’t, and was credited with discovering the Americas, even though he didn’t actually go there. Those places had, of course, been in existence for some time, but Europeans didn’t tend to think anything existed until they found it, and the Vikings, who got there first, didn’t lay claim properly.
