Happy 100th Birthday, Rupert Bear!
Rupert was the creation of illustrator Mary Toutel. He first appeared in the Daily Express (November 6th, 1920) as Little Lost Bear, in the newspaper’s attempt to attract new readers. The better-known Alfred Bestall took over the comic strip in 1935.
I read at a young age (before school), but until then my mother managed to fob me off with the little rhymes under each picture, until I was old enough to grasp the concept of story expansion and point to the longer text at the bottom of the picture panels and say, “No, I want those words”.
