Today is World Book Day! The books you enjoyed as a child or teenager might not all have had historic themes, but the fact you read them (or had them read to you) and want to share them with your children/grandchildren makes for history. You can also ask kids which stories they like now that they think they’ll share with their children.

My own favourites that I shared with our next generation(s) are:

Age 3-7

Bartholomew The Beaver by Ruth Dixon

Benjie Engie by Louise Lawrence Devine

Bob Bushtail’s Adventure by A.J. MacGregor

The Noddy series by Enid Blyton

Smoke & Fluff by A.J. MacGregor (The one being read to the next generation’s next generation in the picture above.)

The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf

Some in this age range I couldn’t share with the next generation because I no longer had a copy (although I’ve tracked them down since and can therefore read them to the next generation’s next generation.)

The Flying Sandbox by Pauline C. Campbell (3-7s)

Puddlejumper by Dorothea J. Snow (3-7s)

The Seven Wonderful Cats by Wallace C. Wadsworth

And my very favouritest favourite when I was 3-7: The Teddy Bear’s Party by Enid Blyton

Ages 7-9

The Bedtime Adventures, an animal series by Thornton W. Burgess. (My favourite being The Adventures of Chatterer The Red Squirrel.)

The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Warner Chandler

The Five Hundred Hats Of Bartholomew Cubbins by Dr. Seuss

Horton Hatches The Egg by Dr. Seuss

Paddle-To-The Sea by Holling C. Holling

Ages 10-13

A Long Way To Go by Borden Deal

The Jennings Series, a school series by Anthony Buckeridge. (My favourite was Jennings’s Little Hut.)

One Dog Man by Ahmad Kamal

The Prince & The Pauper by Mark Twain

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Secret Island & its sequels, by Enid Blyton

The Village That Slept by Monique Peyrouton de Ladebat

The Bertie & Jeeves books by P.G. Wodehouse

Bless This House by Norah Lofts

The Chrysalids  by John Wyndham

Lost Horizon by James Hilton

Podkayne Of Mars by Robert A. Heinlein

The Prisoner Of Zenda by Anthony Hope

Red Planet by Robert A. Heinlein
