Voting (1)

Question: Who are the only people over the age of eighteen who absolutely cannot vote in a Canadian federal election?
Answer: The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada and the Assistant Chief Electoral Officer, as they must remain impartial at all times. Most everyone else over eighteen is eligible to vote. Now. As with most countries, this was not always so. The age was initially twenty-one, and the privilege was restricted to men who owned property or had other valuable assets (translation: rich men). Even if they met those requirements, many men were barred from voting because of their race or religion. Women were only able to vote from 1918 on, and First Nation peoples from 1920, as long as they gave up their treaty rights and native status. This restriction, and other disqualifications based on race and religion, finally ended in 1960.
