On March 11th, 1888, snow began to fall on the northeast section of the United States of America from Washington D.C. all the way up to Maine. It went on falling for three days, accompanied by high winds and below-average temperatures. This storm became known as the Great Blizzard of 1888, and resulted in the deaths of more than four hundred people. Heavy snow caused businesses to shut down and confined area residents to their homes, and non-residents, like Mark Twain (who was visiting New York City), to hotels. The damage inflicted on water, gas, and telegraph lines was so great that after the storm was over, most places moved them underground. In New York, where a lot of people had been stranded up on elevated train lines, it was decided to put those underground too, leading to the construction of the now famous New York Subway.
