HISTORIC THEATRES: REGENT’S PARK OPEN-AIR THEATRE

Open-Air Theatre (1)

The Regent’s Park Open-Air Theatre began as a makeshift theatre for a 1932 production of Twelfth Night, which was transferred there after being brought in as a replacement play for the New Theatre (now the Noel Coward Theatre) after the early closing of a play by the Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini. (Just think how different history might have been if people had just attended Benito Mussolini’s lousy plays, read Joseph Goebbels’s lousy books, or bought Adolf Hitler’s lousy paintings. (Creative types are very sensitive, you know. Reject us, and we take over the world. Or try to.)
This theatre, which seats 1,250, is now one of the largest auditoria in London. Ralph Fiennes (He Who Must Not Be Named) made his professional debut there as Curio in Twelfth Night in 1985, and it has showcased the work of many other well-known performers as well, such as Eileen Atkins, Penelope Keith, Felicity Kendal, Vivian Leigh, Anna Neagle, Flora Robson, Anthony Andrews, Michael Bentine, Michael Gambon, Roy Hudd, Jeremy Irons, and Robert Stephens, to name but a few.
If you live in or near London, or plan to be there between August 28th and September 13th, try to take in its upcoming production, the pre-Civil rights play, To Kill A Mockingbird.
